Customers often ask about Teflon coated wire products and metal products. Teflon refers to the trademarked name established by DuPont. DuPont subsequently decided to spin off this business into another company. There are many kinds of products that are generically described as “Teflon” these days. We discuss several in this blog.

Teflon is a fluoropolymer coating that has a wide range of industrial applications. It generally features high heat resistance and a low coefficient of friction.

PTFE – Polytetrafluoroethylene is probably the most common type of Teflon. PTFE will generally require a primer and then application of the PTFE. PTFE has a high temperature rating. It has a low coefficient of friction and high abrasion resistance.

FEP — Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene is a coating that provides excellent chemical resistance. Like PTFE, it also has a low coefficient of friction. FEP coatings are available in liquid and powder form.

PFA – Perfluoroalkoxy offers greater toughness, higher continuous use temperatures, and potentially thicker coatings.

ETFE — Ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene is a copolymer that offers excellent chemical resistance and is probably the toughest of the Teflon coatings. It can be applied with a thick coating to provide very robust protection. It is available in powder form.

In addition, there are specialty Teflon formulations that are made for specific industries or specific applications. Deciding on the right Teflon coating for your metal products will depend on which characteristics of the coating are important to you and ultimately your specific application.

By working closely with our customers, we can assist in your selection process to make sure that you use the right kind of Teflon coating.
